[LORE] The Funeral of Raul Hidalgo
For the first time in nearly three decades, the bells of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, first a cathedral, then a Guzman casino, and now a cathedral again, rang at midday to announce a funeral mass. Subcommandante Getulio worked quickly, tearing through the mass of looseleaf paper upon a dingy wooden desk that, for whatever reason lost to time, had IMPORT OF CHINA FRAGILE THIS SIDE UP printed along the top. There was no sense in it. They’d had dozens of interviews with known sicarios, but gone nowhere – as Getulio had warned el Capitan would be the case, but despite it all he couldn’t help but be consumed by the case. A man, not just a man, but the father of a nation, shot in bright daylight, in the full viewing public of thousands, and nothing. No weapon. No witnesses. Even the bullet had been destroyed, shattering against bone. Not even a motive. Yeah, most of the papers blamed the Guzmans, and some more astute perhaps blamed the Beltrans, but really, why? “Getulio.” He jumped up from the mess of his desk. “You startled me.” “The funeral.” “I know.” “El Capitan wants no tragedy and no missing. You needed to go twenty minutes ago,” Carmen spoke softly, matronly. “Don’t worry, mijo, I’ll keep watch.” Getulio nodded, pulling on a shabby gray overcoat that was just barely discernable as a uniform by an astute observer, in good light. He gave Carmen a hug, and stepped out into the searing midday sun. It hadn’t done the police any favors. The streets of Parral, or what passed for it, were packed. Everyone wanted to see for themselves. Raul Hidalgo, the father of a nation, killed during its infancy. In his more bitter moments, Getulio had thought to himself there was no better way to guarantee yourself a legacy and mythic status. The Assembly would probably build a mausoleum on the site of his shooting. The man had been dead a month and the whole country had promptly forgotten the year of political bickering and vicious debate that preceded the sordid affair. He pushed his way through the crowds, through the narrow alleys that had once been home to countless brothels and small bars, today home only to multitudes. Even they were empty. Getulio eventually made his way to the Cathedral plaza, taking his place at the line. “You’re late,” he hissed, and even without looking Getulio knew it was el Capitan. Who else could whisper so deafeningly? The bells began to ring. “I appear to be just on time,” he retorted. “You’re late.” It was said with a finality that Getulio knew he would regret later on in the evening briefing. An elderly priest led a procession out of the cathedral, and behind him were ten men, carrying the casket holding the body of the myth, Raul Hidalgo. Well, they were trying at least. There were too many men who deserved the honor of pallbearer and Getulio took delight in noting that the Governor of Chihuahua was desperately trying to get a hand on the casket and failing admirably in the attempt. He doubted anyone would write that one in the history books. The elderly priest, or was it a bishop, most of Parral couldn’t remember the last time there was a church service in the town, much less the obscure ranks and hierarchy of the dead institution, began his eulogy with a short prayer in some other arcane language before diving into his eulogy of the great man. Hidalgo was born in poverty, in a log cabin, to a dead mother and ill father, and it was by the Grace of God and His Own Sweat that he Built this Great Nation, yadda yadda yadda. They were lucky most of the people couldn’t read, the whole eulogy was a trite retread of history’s greatest clichés. The real Raul Hidalgo died on that hot day – the rich slavemaster whose wealth made even the narcoprinces take notice; the oligarch whose throne was built on as much blood as anyone’s in this godforsaken patch of land called Sinaloa. This wasn’t a funeral mass; this was the birth of a legendary Founding Father. The band began to play, signaling the end of pretty speeches, the start of Getulio’s duty. They marched in formation, Parral’s finest, leading the Great Man down the street so that the Adoring Public could see Him with their own eyes. An antique hearse convertible had been appropriated from god know’s where for the purpose, and Hidalgo’s body was now on full display. Begrudgingly, Getulio had to admit the mortician knew his job, and the Great Man looked sleeping more than dead – the Assembly had probably picked him up right from the Guzmans. Looking at the crowd around him, Getulio realized that the man’s death probably had served some greater purpose. These people weren’t Sinaloan anymore, they were Ibarranese, and through their tears, a nascent sort of national pride was felt for their country’s Greatest Son. The Provisional Government had demonstrated its structural foundations, quickly swearing in Nicolas Suarez as the new Temporary Interim President and announcing that elections would continue on schedule. With this realization, came a strange sort of peace as well. He might never find out who shot the man, but was that important in the grand scheme of things? The man died, not the Legend, and the Legend was what Ibarra needed. The man was just more body among the many, one last kill, the last and final breath of the Sinaloa that was, but the first of the Ibarra that would be.
Had an amazing 2-week coachella W2 road trip and wanted to share my itinerary because it worked so damn well!
Hey everyone, I'm a Canadian who's done a couple festivals in Canada (VELD and Osheaga), but I always wanted to go to a camping festival and Coachella worked out amazingly with my school schedule this year. I got most of April off, so I bought 2 W2 passes at the general sale and found a buddy who was interested in doing a road trip. I'm a huge fan of climbing and surfing, and I love California but there's a lot of places I haven't been, so I wanted to work in some of that given how much free time I had. Anyway, here's the details of our trip, hoping it may inspire some future Coachella road trippers! PRE-TRIP:
Bought 2x W2 passes + Shuttle Pass (unwanted) and car camping on General Sale day ($1200 US total). Wanted W1 and actually had a shot at them but my credit card was maxed out.
Bought flights on SWOOP from Hamilton Ontario (near Toronto) to Vegas - $250 round trip.
Reserved a rental SUV in Vegas for 2 weeks. (Considered a JUCY but eventually decided tents and an SUV would be more flexible and cheaper).
Did some general research on the places I wanted to go, had a rough idea of an itinerary but no bookings.
Sunday April 14-VEGAS:
Parked at Hamilton Airport ($65 CAD for 1 wk + $15/day for each additional day).
Direct flight Hamilton to Vegas 9:30pm. Packed everything in 1 backpack per person, didn't pay carry-on or checked fee.
booked a room at Luxor hotel that same day on Priceline (came to $80 US total for 2 queen beds).
Booked campsites at Zion for next 2 days ($20 + $50)
Walked around Vegas till 2am drinking beers, checking out casinos (I had never been).
Monday April 15-ZION:
Picked up Venture 2P camping rental pack from Basecamp Outdoor Gear in Vegas. Upgraded to 3-season sleeping bags. Came with stove, sleeping pads, 2P tent, camp table, 2 camp chairs, knife, headlights, lantern. $325 for 2 weeks.
Grocery run at Walmart, got pasta, meat and sauce, chili, water, etc.
Arrived in Zion, did a sunset hike of Watchman trail, set up camp and cooked dinner.
Tues April 16-ZION:
Bought America the Beautiful 1-yr all-included National Park pass (covers a whole vehicle). - $80 USD
Hiked Zion: Angel's landing was amazing, very cool classic hike with scary cliff drops. The Narrows hike, another classic, was closed (typical in April). Ranger said we had hiked most of the open trails in Zion.
Opted to give up our $20 site and instead drive to Page AZ to check out other parks. Easily booked a campsite, $25.
Wed April 17-Antelope Canyon/Grand Canyon:
Went on Antelope Canyon tour. $60 US, run by Navajo locals. Short, photography-based tour. Had to either book ahead or show up early for cancellations.
Drove to Indio, beautiful drive and stopped at the Grand Canyon on the way.
Stayed at Indio motel (booked day-of, $100 US for 2 beds). Owner held onto our camp knife and tent pegs for the weekend!
got In-N-Out burger - was amazing
Thurs April 18-SO-CAL:
Debated going early for Coachella camping spot, but instead spent the day getting supplies at Walmart (Got info from another camper to get a Canopy - this was key) and in Orange county/LA. Checked out Newport Beach.
Pulled into car camping at 10pm, short lines. Spot was pretty far away in 1017 st S, but it really didn't bother us too much. Neighbours were all friendly, most of them stayed around camp for most of the festival though.
Checked out silent disco and went to bed.
Fri April 19-COACHELLA:
Woke up late, made breakfast, got ready and headed to festival for 2pm. Blown away by how amazing the grounds were. Antarctic was also dope. Saw about 15-20 acts, just exploring the grounds. Went back to camp 1x in evening, then went back to the festival until 1am, then slept.
Sat April 20th-Coachella:
Entered fest at about 3pm, regrouped at camp in evening, then went back and stayed till 1am again. Slept
Sun April 21st-Coachella:
Lined up for Sunday Service at 7am. Stayed till finish
Went to camp, headed to the grounds at 3:30pm, stayed until midnight. Went to turn-down tent for a couple hours, grabbed food, had beers with neighbours and slept around 2-3am.
Mon April 22nd-Joshua Tree:
Tore down camp and ready to go by 10am - needed a jumpstart though (dude did it for free because we only had canadian version of AAA!)
Grocery run at Wal-Mart
drove to Joshua Tree, rented climbing shoes ($10 each), and tried to rent a crash pad but the place was closed.
Cooked dinner in the Boy Scout parking lot, then hiked out to backcountry camp (you have to self-register)-FREE.
ran into a dude hiking who was gonna go bouldering the next day so we planned to meet up in the morning.
Stars in J-Tree are amazing. We threw "Underwater" by Rüfüs du Sol on repeat to relive Antarctic, and right at the final second we saw a gigantic shooting star!
Tues April 23rd-Joshua Tree:
Caught sunrise in J-tree from our campsite, then tore down camp and met up with the guys to go bouldering. Bouldered till 3pm, then returned our shoes and did the Mt Ryan hike at sunset.
Drove to Santa Barbara for a halfway stop on our way to big sur. 4-5hr drive, motel cost $100 for 2 beds.
Wed April 24 - Surfing/Big Sur
Got up late, drove to Pismo beach (such a nice surf town) and rented some boards and wetsuits for the half-day-$25 USD each. Waves were good for beginners to fool around on. Packed up around 4pm and drove towards Big Sur, Highway 1.
Saw the elephant seals at the southern tip of Big Sur
Saw evening and sunset along Big Sur - truly the most amazing drive I've ever done.
Got dinner in Monterey and then drove to Yosemite in the dark. Got to the park entrance at 2AM and slept in the car.
Thurs April 25 - Yosemite
Woke up at 5am to drive to Camp 4 and get spots in this famous campground where rock climbing was born. We were 12th in line for 59 spots, and cost is $6/person per night. (*NOTE: this first-come first-serve system is getting shut down forever in May - you will have to enter an overnight online lottery).
We set up camp (6 people share a site - our site-mates were really friendly and we met lots of great people in Camp 4).
We hiked Upper Yosemite Falls which starts right at Camp 4. Took all day as we decided to try to get to El Capitan during a trail closure (many trails were closed due to snow). We didn't succeed but it was fun.
Fri April 26 - Yosemite
We rented shoes and boulder mats in Yosemite and went bouldering until 3pm. There are great boulders right near Camp 4.
At 3:30pm we did the Mist Trail hike, which brings you to Vernal falls and Nevada falls. It's beautiful and a lot easier than Upper Falls.
Sat April 27 - San Francisco
Caught sunrise over the Dawn Wall of El Capitan. This was an amazing sight to me.
Tore down camp and headed out before 11am. Drove to San Francisco (5 hours), crossed the Golden Gate in.
Got a cheap motel in San Francisco ($110/night for 2 beds). Used the Ford GoBikes ($10/24h) and did a bike tour of Japantown, Chinatown, Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Mission District, Coit Tower and Telegraph hill, Haight-Ashbury, and Presidio/Palace of Fine Arts. Got home at about 3am, exhausted.
Sun April 28th
Woke up at 7am for the long drive back to Vegas. Stopped at the google campus in Mountain View to ride the GBikes around.
Got to Vegas at 5pm, returned our camping gear and ate some great Mexican food.
Flew back to Hamilton on a 10:30pm flight.
Overall we had an AMAZING coachella, saw some breathtaking views, got a taste of California climbing and surfing, did some amazing drives, and met awesome people. We spent a lot of time outdoors and we felt super relaxed by the end of the trip. I think overall we did well saving money, and had a good mix of planning and spontaneity. WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY:
Plan only 1 day in Zion and book campsite in advance - too many closures in April. Maybe spend some time in another park (Death Valley, Mojave, etc)
Spend less time on Friday getting supplies and more time in So-Cal (check out LA Observatory, LA Proper or San Diego)
Try to do less campsite re-groups for coachella, and just stay once I enter the grounds. Maybe go a little later in the day to stay out later. Try and find a big group there to party with early on. Bring more Mio Sports (1/person/day would be safe) for electrolyte hydration :P
Try not to let our battery die on Monday - think I left a door open, oops
Get to J-Tree a little earlier for a boulder mat (3:30 or so)
See the eucalyptus forest in Pismo Beach!
Bring my own climbing shoes, maybe other climbing gear too.
I definitely travel very fast and I was lucky to have a travel buddy who was able to keep up. But if you want to see some amazing parts of california and have some free time around coachella, I hope this gives you some ideas! Drop any questions below, and let me know if you think it would be good to crosspost this anywhere. Thanks! PS: We got so much good coachella info from this Sub. Not sure how it would have gone without everyone's help. Thank you!

Talking about it usually gets me writing about it. Don't ask me why I spill this shit here, or anywhere really. I linked this to Ron yesterday because I wanted him to see where Al Petteway fits into another chat we were having about another subject; desert island music or video. If I could only bring 5 vids, Ken Burns' The National Parks: America's Best Idea would be 1 of them. Might be #1. It's a masterpiece. Anyway, after linking that old preview of the show to Ron, I watched it for perhaps the 73rd time and, as usual, came away with a different feeling for our National Parks. This time it's fear. Barack Obama is, along with the Roosevelts, one of the best friends the National Parks ever had. (I can't help but capitalize National Parks) His use of the Antiquities Act established 23 new National Monuments, more than any other president. He enlarged others. (He took care of that Denali business once and for all.) In addition his recent actions vis a vis drilling for oil in the oceans, Obama's love affair with the parks is going to help cement his environmental legacy. Dude kicked much ass and we should all be forever grateful. Which brings me to the biggest dildo to ever get elected president. Dayton Duncan is the guy behind the Ken Burns series. Burns & crew catch the stunning scenery, and Burns does what he does with a camera pan over the old black & whites beautifully. But it's Duncan's script, the interviews with the people behind the parks, the history lesson that he lays out so beautifully that draws you in to the 12 hour production. And Dayton Duncan is also a renowned expert on Lewis & Clark which is why Burns chose him to handle that series as well. A passionate National Parks defender and a Lewis & Clark expert. My kinda fuckin' guy! I like to make fun of Dayton because he gets choked up easily. When he talks about the vote Lewis & Clark took in December 1805, about which side of the Columbia River would be the winter quarters, and he talks about York, a black slave, and Sacagawea, a woman & Native American, both being allowed to vote - a century plus before blacks or women were actually allowed to vote, Dayton chokes up. When he talks about proposing to his girlfriend (she said yes) in a National Park, and now taking his 15 year old daughter - "now becoming a beautiful young woman herself" - to that same spot in that same park - Dayton chokes up. Really chokes up. Oh who the fuck am I kidding ...he cries. And it's great. Gotta love someone who can get that emotional about something. And while I don't cry cry when I think about the parks, I can choke up a little bit. It's not just the obvious stupefying beauty of the places that gets me. It's also what they stand for. Democracy. They belong to all of us. It's something Burns & Duncan drive home repeatedly throughout the entire 12 hours. You own these parks. You are a part owner of some of the most astonishingly beautiful real estate on Earth and nobody can take it away from you. The only thing you need to do is make sure it's there for your kids. But it goes even deeper than that when I think about our parks, and the biggest dildo ever elected president. My recent trips to Grand Canyon have left a permanent impression. Like Arches and Canyonlands I can close my eyes and still see what took my breath away the first time I saw them. It still takes my breath away. But Grand Canyon is where I interacted with lots of other people. Maybe observed would be a better word as I was traveling alone and I didn't really talk to anybody. My trips have been in late December and early January and for whatever reason I saw far more people from distant lands than I saw people from the United States. How do I know? You just know. There was practically no English being spoken. From Mather Point, to Hermit's Rest, and all the way down to the Watchtower it didn't matter where I stopped with my camera. It was Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, German, Polish, Japanese, French, Arabic and occasionally I'd hear someone speaking English. As much as I was looking at the canyon, I was checking out these little knots of people and watching their reaction to what they were seeing. Awe. They were in fucking awe. Goggle-eyed. I don't speak Chinese but I could tell they were using superlatives. Great sweeping arm motions accompanied by "Oh my fucking God!" sounding phrases. It hit me like a ton of bricks. Sure I drove 1750 miles to get from Chicago to the Mather Point parking lot. These people traveled here from all over the fucking planet! Air travel, hotels, rental cars, restaurants, souvenirs, pictures to take home. This was a pilgrimage for these folks. They had to see it with their own eyes and they traveled to another friggin' country to do it! Our country. Came here to see our parks. If I ever felt something like real national pride it was that day at Mather Point. From Teddy to Franklin to Barack our presidents have used our parks and monuments as a way to bring us all together and to bring visitors from other countries. Have a fucking look at what makes America great people. This shit isn't changing. Ever. It looked like that when Dayton Duncan proposed to his girlfriend, and it looks exactly the same now when he shows it to his 15 year old daughter. The parks are timeless. You can look at the country in general and see what the march of time has done. We hurdle into the future building subdivisions and strip malls without a real clue about what the future holds. If we want to see into the future, all we need to do is visit one of our National Parks. They will always look like this. Unless this fucking piece of shit decides that's fucking stupid and we need to develop them. We need a tram leading from the South Rim Casino to the floor of the Grand Canyon. We need a gondola to shuttle people to the top of El Capitan. There needs to be a 1400 room hotel overlooking Old Faithful. That's what scares me. But not only that. If this jagoff has his way large groups of people will not feel welcome at our parks. People from far-away lands. People who scare him because he doesn't understand their culture and he's too fucking stupid to learn. Better to tell the foreigners that they need several forms of ID & a clear purpose for being in the parks, our parks, if they plan to visit. I suddenly feel a desperate need to visit as many of our parks as I can, quickly, because I have a feeling they aren't as timeless as I might want to believe.

The gulls soared to an early lead with a power play score early in the first period, and once more in the second. The Rampage weren't quite for long as they stomped out of the locker room to start the third period, netting two goals in the first six minutes. As friarfanatic pointed out, John Gibson returned to the front of the net tonight, and he held the Rampage to 2 goals on 33 shots.

San Antonio was without their captain tonight, according to AintSingingForCoke, who stated that el capitan was recalled to the Avalanche earlier today.
According to spongie555, Rampage goalie Calvin Pickard was named AHL Goalie of the Month. Congrats to him.
